Josiah began marking his production with his name about 1800's, impressed onto the underside of the article with printer's movable type.
This 'mark' was often uneven and sometimes arched, such as this.
About 1769, he adopted the familiar mark with the name impressed from a single slug.
The WEDGWOOD mark is found on his useful wares between 1769 and 1781.
Wedgwood termed his version of red stoneware 'Rosso Antico', literally “old red”. Wedgwood refined the common redware, and
began production as early as 1765 in small quantities. At the request of his partner, Thomas Bentley, production resumed in 1776.
Rosso Antico production continued until 1900. After 1790, he often combined Black Basalt within his decorative items,
covered with hand painted, enamel decoration.
Wedgwood gained inspiration from the traditional red color clayware produced in the Potteries' era during the
17th and 18th century. However, he brought it to his degree of perfection unknown previously, utilizing it in the
production of many decorative as well as useful items.
Lovingly Displayed in a smoke-free, pet-free home, as well as out of any and all sunlight.
